Folk-Customs, Gasu-ri Beoksu and Jimdae
Beoksu(totem pole) stands
on the entrance of Araetgamurae Village
at Gasu-ri. Dongbang Daejanggun and
Seobang Daejanggun are carved on a pair
of beoksu. Beoksue Ritual is performed
every lunar 15th of January to pray
well-being of a village, healthy, and
long life.
There is Utgamurae Village if passing
Beoksu. You can find several Jimdae(guardian
pole) on the entrance. A wooden duck
with a thin bamboo strip on its mouth
sits on a long pine tree, 6 meters long,
facing outside village. The purpose
of building Jimdae is to prevent fire
because the shape of a
village is a fire mountain. Once the whole
village has been fired. Jimdae is built every
lunar 1st of February.
