It is believed that
Unjusa and a thousand Buddhas
and pagodas was built in the end
of the Unified Silla Period by
the monk Doseon. Unfortunately,
there are no written records proving
it but . A number of stone Buddhas
and pagodas inside the temple
are not elaborate, but rough.
They are estimated to have
been created in about mid-Goryeo
Dynasty(12C) over a long time,
not at the same time, even though
there are no objective records.
It was designated as Historic
Relic No. 312. Since 1984, excavation
was performed four times, stone
shrine for Buddha was restored,
a cylindrical pagoda was repaired,
and Iljuman and Bojegak weres
built |
¢Á Nine-story
stone pagoda which is the highest
in Unjusa(Treasure No. 796)
This pagoda is the first pagoda which
stands at the entrance and is the
highest. A large rock was the foundation
of the pagoda. Considering that the
shape of the temple is like a ship,
nine-story stone pagoda may play a
role of (a Ãß°¡) sail.
¢Á Stone
shrine for Buddha(Treasure No. 797)
It stands 5km south of Multi-Story
Cylindrical Stone Pagoda. Two sitting
Buddhas face north and south back
to back inside the stone shrine. Some
parts of a roof and a wall body was
repaired by cement between 1920 and
1940 and they were took apart a piece.
Sometimes some stone materials are
found under the stone shrine.
¢Á Unique
multi-story cylindrical Stone Pagoda(Treasure
No. 798)
This pagoda stands on the north of
the Stone Shrine for Buddha. Its shape
is very unique. It is a round-shaped
pagoda from bottom to top. It is also
called Yeonhwa Pagoda.
¢Á Chilseong
Bawi(Rock)
There are seven disk-shaped stones
on the right of a road under the lying
Buddha, called 'Chilseong Bawi(the
Seven Stars of the Great Bear Rock
in English)'. Surprisingly, findings
that the angle of the seven stars
of the Great Bear is the same as that
of Chilseong Bawi and the brightness
of the seven stars of the Great Bear
is proportioned to the diameter size
of Chilseong Rock make Unjusa much
more mysterious.
