Sangbongsa
Temple stands on Sadong Village, Jeung-ri,
Iyang-myeon, Hwasun-gun. Judging from
that Hyecheol stupa in Taeansa Temple
at Gokseong suggests that Hyecheol spent
his summer in Sangbongsa after returning
from China in the 1st year of King Sinmu(839),
this temple is estimated to have been
established before 839. His successor,
Jinghyo established sajasanmun in Heungnyeungsa
Temple in Yeongwol, Gangwon-do Province,
which means the monk Cheolgam was a
founder of sajaseonmun. The monk Cheolgam's
fame was widely spread and King Gyeongmun
looked up to him as his preceptor. After
he entered Nirvana, King Gyeongmun conferred
a posthumous title of Cheolgam and named
his stupa Jingso. It was rebuilt several
times, but most buildings and property
were burnt
down by Japanese invaders in the Japanese
Invasion of Korea in 1597 except and in the
Korean War in 1950, but Geukrakjeon and Daeungjeon.
In 1978, with the reconstruction of Myeongbujeon,
old glory seemed to begin again, but Daeungjeon
and a three-story wooden pagoda were destroyed
by fire in 1984. Daeungjeon was rebuild and
Haetalmun(vimukti door), Ysachae, and a bell
pavilion were newly built in 1986. In 1997,
the Cheolgam Tour Route was rearranged and
Yukhwa-dong was built newly.
